5 Ways to Support Healthy Aging

September is Healthy Aging Month, an annual observance dedicated to inspiring adults to take steps toward improving their physical, mental, social and overall well-being as they grow older.

Healthy aging looks different for everyone. It isn’t about trying to stop the aging process or following a perfect routine. Instead, it’s about making choices that support health, independence and quality of life at every stage of life.

Here are five important areas to consider when thinking about healthy aging.

1. Move Regularly

Regular physical activity is one of the best ways to support health as we age. Activities such as walking, yoga, swimming and other forms of exercise can help protect heart health, maintain muscle strength and improve balance.

Staying active can also help reduce the risk of falls, which can have a significant impact on an older adult’s independence.

The key is finding activities you enjoy and can do safely and consistently. Even small amounts of movement throughout the day can add up.

2. Eat for Longevity

Good nutrition plays an important role in maintaining health and energy as we age.

Focus on a variety of whole foods, including fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and high-fiber whole grains. Dark leafy greens can be especially beneficial as part of a balanced diet and provide nutrients important for eye health.

Rather than focusing on restrictive diets, think about adding more nutritious foods to your meals and choosing a variety of foods that provide the nutrients your body needs.

3. Keep Your Brain Active

Just as physical activity benefits the body, mental stimulation can help keep the mind engaged.

Reading, learning a new skill, working on puzzles, playing games or exploring a new hobby are all ways to challenge the brain and keep learning.

Sleep matters, too. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night. Establishing a consistent sleep routine and creating a comfortable environment can help support healthy sleep habits.

4. Stay Socially Connected

Healthy aging isn’t just about what we do for our bodies and minds. Our relationships and social connections are important, too.

Spending time with family and friends, participating in community activities, joining a group or pursuing shared interests can provide a sense of connection and purpose.

Staying socially engaged can also help combat loneliness and isolation, which can become more common as circumstances change throughout later life.

5. Schedule Preventive Check-Ups

Preventive healthcare is an important part of healthy aging. Regular visits with healthcare providers, along with recommended screenings, vaccinations and physical exams, can help identify health concerns early and provide opportunities to manage conditions before they become more serious.

Keeping track of appointments, medications and recommended screenings can make it easier to stay on top of your health.

Healthy Aging Is a Lifelong Journey

There is no single formula for healthy aging. What matters is finding realistic ways to care for your body, mind and relationships while staying proactive about your health.

At Colorado PACE, we take a whole-person approach to supporting older adults. We understand that healthy aging involves more than medical care. It means supporting physical health, emotional well-being, social connection and independence so participants can live as fully as possible.

This Healthy Aging Month, consider one small change you can make to support your well-being. A daily walk, a nutritious meal, a phone call with a friend or a preventive appointment can all be meaningful steps toward aging well.
