Healthy Aging Tips: Six Ways to Support Your Health and Independence
Healthy aging is about supporting your overall well-being so you can continue doing the things you enjoy and participating in the life of your community. While everyone’s health and needs are different, there are several everyday habits that can help promote healthy aging.
1. Focus on Nutrition
A balanced diet provides the nutrients your body needs to maintain energy, strength and overall health. Try to include a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meals. If changes in appetite, difficulty preparing meals or other concerns are making it harder to eat well, talk with your health care team.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drinking enough fluids is an important part of staying healthy. Make a habit of drinking water throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. If you have been advised to limit fluids because of a medical condition, follow your health care provider’s recommendations.
3. Keep Moving
Regular physical activity can help support strength, balance, flexibility, mobility and overall well-being. Choose activities that are appropriate for your abilities and that you enjoy, whether that means walking, stretching, dancing, gardening or participating in an exercise program. Talk with your health care team before beginning a new exercise routine if you have concerns about what is appropriate for you.
4. Practice Medication Safety
As we get older, we may take multiple medications, making it especially important to understand what we are taking and why. Keep an up-to-date list of all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and supplements, and share it with your health care providers. Take medications as directed and talk with your care team before making changes.
5. Support Your Brain Health
Your brain benefits from staying active and connected. Reading, learning a new skill, doing puzzles, enjoying hobbies and spending time with family, friends and your community are all ways to keep your mind engaged. Meaningful activities and social connections can also contribute to emotional well-being.
6. Take Steps to Prevent Falls
Falls can have a significant impact on independence, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk. Keep walkways clear of clutter, make sure your home has adequate lighting, wear supportive shoes and use assistive devices as recommended. Exercises that improve strength and balance can also help. Talk with your health care team if you have concerns about falling or your balance.
