National Physical Therapy Month: Helping Older Adults Stay Strong and Independent

October is National Physical Therapy Month — a time to celebrate the physical therapy profession and recognize the important role physical therapists and physical therapist assistants play in improving health and quality of life.

For older adults, physical therapy can offer benefits that go well beyond recovering from an injury. It can help people maintain strength, mobility and confidence so they can continue living the lives they want to live.

At Colorado PACE, physical therapy is one of the ways we support older adults in maintaining their health and independence.

Be as healthy as possible for as long as possible

As we age, maintaining strength, balance and mobility becomes increasingly important. Physical therapy can help older adults work on these areas while also addressing individual goals and abilities.

The goal isn't necessarily to become an athlete or achieve a particular level of physical fitness. It's about helping each person be as healthy and active as possible for as long as possible.

Remain at home and connected to your community

For many older adults, being able to remain safely in their own home and community is incredibly important. Physical therapy can help support that goal by addressing mobility, balance, strength and other challenges that can make everyday activities more difficult.

Maintaining these abilities can help older adults continue spending time with family and friends, participating in their communities and enjoying the familiarity of home.

Get stronger so you can keep doing what you enjoy

Strength and mobility aren't just about exercise. They're about being able to do the things that make life meaningful.

That might mean getting out for a walk, working in the garden, preparing a favorite meal, playing with grandchildren or simply moving around the home with greater confidence.

Physical therapy can help older adults build or maintain the strength and skills they need to continue participating in the activities they enjoy.

Focus on what you CAN do

Perhaps one of the most important aspects of physical therapy is its focus on possibilities.

Rather than focusing only on limitations, physical therapists can help older adults identify what they can do and find strategies to make everyday activities safer and more manageable.

Every person has different abilities, goals and challenges. Physical therapy can help meet people where they are and work with them toward what matters most to them.

Celebrating the professionals who keep us moving

This National Physical Therapy Month, Colorado PACE celebrates the physical therapists and physical therapist assistants who help older adults stay strong, maintain their independence and continue participating in the lives they value.

Because staying healthy isn't just about adding years to life. It's also about helping people make the most of those years — in their homes, in their communities and with the people they love.
